PHILIPPINES: Food poisoning at the wedding feast

Hundreds of visitors allegedly experienced food poisoning after attending a wedding feast at Ilo-ilo City.

A happy ending turns into tragedy as hundreds of wedding visitors rushed to near hospital after food poisoning at the wedding of Filipino bride and her British groom held at Estancia, Iloilo, 8 August 2015. Hundred guests experienced symptoms of food poisoning after eating the food served during the event.

Other residents who were attended the wedding at Barangay Gogo in Estancia, diagnosed with symptoms of food poisoning including stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. They were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital, some guest were still confined at Balasan District Hospital.

According to the report, the bride’s family hired two cooks. They prepared two cows and two pigs and slaughtered for the reception. The food was cooked early on Saturday and served at noon on the wedding day, for about 10 hours later, served to hundreds of guests.

Investigation has been made to determine the cause of illness. Sample of the food eaten by wedding guest at the brides home been submitted to the laboratory test at Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City for examination.

Dr. Ma. Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, coordinator of the provincial epidemiological surveillance unit stated, more than 70 of those affected including children were brought to the Jesus M. Colmenares District Hospital in the neighboring town of Balasan where they were given oral rehydration solution and antibiotics.

Food poisoning usually refers to illness resulting from the consumption of contaminated food, pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or parasites that contaminate food. This is due to improper food handling, preparation and storage. The person who prepares the food must practice a good hygiene before, during, and after food preparation. This can reduce the chances of contracting an illness.

At home, prevention of food poisoning must be consider through a good food safety practices. Many toxins are not destroyed even when cooked. Bacterial poisoning can be prevented, even if food is contaminated by cooking and either eating or refrigerating it effectively.IMAGE/newsfirst
