Swansea City staged comeback against Manchester United

Swansea City maintained their unbeaten record as they defeated Manchester United 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Bafetimbi Gomis was the hero of the game as he scored the winner for the home side. The France international scored a somewhat fortuitous second when Swansea defeated United by the same scoreline in February at the same venue. The in-form Gomis, who now has nine goals from 10 top-flight matches, settled matters in south Wales, rounding off a Swansea turnaround in the 65th minute.

The Spain international Juan Mata had put United in front in the second half with his 50th goal in English football. Swansea took just 13 minutes to level the score when Andre Ayew powered a header past diving United goalkeeper Romero. The hosts’ comeback was inspired by a tactical change from manager Garry Monk, who switched to a 4-3-1-2 formation moments before the equalizer.

The home side had a cautious start but United put the pressure in the opening minutes when they earned a free-kick on the edge of the opponents’ box. Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski got down well to keep out Memphis Depay’s curling strike. The hosts created couple of first half goal scoring chances but United goalkeeper Romero was too good.

“There is a lot of frustration but it is more disappointment. For 85 minutes, we are the dominant team on the pitch and we lose in five minutes. But we lost in the five minutes because Swansea changed the shape,” said United boss Loius van Gaal.

The result spoiled Louis Van Gaal’s 50th match in charge of Manchester United as the visitors were beaten for the first time this season. With this victory Swansea moved up to fourth on the points table, four points behind the leaders Manchester City. IMAGE/sportsmole.co.uk
