Manchester United have completed the signing of Anthony Martial from AS Monaco on a four-year contract, with the option of an extra season.
The French footballer completed a move to the Premier League side for £36 million, becoming the third most expensive signing of the club after Angel Di Maria (£59.7m) and Juan Mata (£37.1). With this move, the Premier League spending passed £850 million mark for the first time in a transfer window.
France international was given permission by the French Football Fedration to leave the training camp to fly to Manchester to complete his medical and move to United. He arrived at the Aon Training Complex mid-afternoon on Monday and underwent his medical. The athlete has been given the number nine shirt.
The 19-year-old became the most expensive teenager in the world after completing his move to Old Trafford. The previous world record fee for a youngster was £27million, which United paid for Luke Shaw last summer and Paris St-Germain spent on Roma center-back Marquinhos in 2013.
“I am so excited to be joining Manchester United,” said Martial. “I have always wanted to play in the Premier League and to join the biggest club in the world is what every young footballer dream of.”
Martial, who represented France Under-21, started his senior career at Lyon in 2012 and later moved to AS Monaco, where he spent two years. He scored nine goals in 35 games in Ligue 1 last season. Recently he received his first call-up to the senior national team.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said that Anthony is a talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time in Monaco. IMAGE/skysports
