Tennis couple – Maria Sharapova and Gregor Dimitrov have split up after dating for over two years. The news was confirmed by Dimitrov during a press conference on Friday.
Grigor, 24-year-old Bulgarian, said “our paths split.”
“We experienced wonderful moments together. I wish her much happiness and success in life and in tennis,” Dmitrov told the media.
“Now I’m concentrated entirely on the game. This is the summer of the new beginning for me.”
The break up comes just two weeks after Sharapova was defeated by Dimitrov’s former girlfriend, Serena Williams, at Wimbledon.
The tennis couple has been in intimate relationship since early 2013 during the Madrid Open. The pair was spotted kissing on the streets of Madrid.
In an interview, Sharapova said about the bond “It’s nice to have someone who really understands and respects [what I do] and know the drill”.
“There are so many little variants in an athlete’s career that are not always easy to explain to the outside world. So it is nice that they are aware of it and know it,” she said.
Dimitrov, currently number 16 in the ATP rankings, had a difficult season so far and lost in straight sets to Richard Gasquet in the third round of recently concluded Wimbledon. He swallowed his fifth defeat in five matches against the Frenchman.
He also parted ways with his coach Roger Rasheed earlier in July.
Tensions between the tennis duo no doubt came to a boiling point when Sharapova came face to face with Williams in the grass court competition earlier this month, the British tabloid added.
Five times grand slam champion Sharapova is yet to make a statement regarding her split with Grigor Dimitrov. The tennis player previously dated fellow tennis professional Andy Roddick and was engaged to former Los Angeles Lakers player Sasha Vujacic before their split in 2012. IMAGE/ibtimes
